Life as a Freelancer

One of the directions that I want to take with this blog, is to talk about my life as a freelancer and some of my experiences. I feel that right now for the most part all of my posts have pretty much been about some cool product or web site. Tere is nothing wrong with that and I will continue to posts those cool things, but I want to add a more personal touch and talk about me for change.

I’m a pretty young freelancer, I have been doing web design for about 3 years but only freelancing for 1. I’m a full time student, and part time freelancer, so that means I can freelance and get my feet wet without a lot of risk which is always nice. Like most starting out freelancers my flow of work is not very consistent, I either have several client offers or none at all. Currently I am freelancing for a web design company, Mojo Active. They provide a pretty steady flow of work, which has been great.

There are some definite perks to freelancing. Before I did this I worked part time in a grocery store…it sucked! I defiantly love freelancing more then my previous job. I get a lot of flexibility in when I want to work. The money is better then the minimum wage I made before. I’m my own boss, I can do things the way I want to do them, most of the time. I still have clients who sometimes want things done a certain way and what not, but for the most part I call the shots.

However freelancing has its sour moments. It’s not all fun and games, there are a lot of things that go along with running a business. There are clients to deal with, some of them are awesome while others require a bit more effort to please. Keeping track of invoices and estimates and payments and tracking hours is work that you have to do. It is also work you don’t get paid for, it just comes with running a business. Fortunately I have found tools to help me, and I enjoy doing these business tasks (I say this now, but I know after a while I will be singing a different tune).

So for now I’m happy freelancing, I don’t want to go back to working part time at a grocery store. Will I freelance full time? Maybe, but I think I need to try having a full time job first.
