Had a little computer malfunction this morning. My CPU heatsink came loose, and it caused my CPU to overheat. To protect the CPU the bios was set to shut down the computer in the event of an overheating. It took me a little while to figure all of this out. When my computer first randomly shut off, I thought maybe a cable is loose. Checked all the cables and then turned it on again, wouldn’t even get passed Windows start screen with out turning off. So I thought it was the power supply. Opened up the case checked all the cables and that’s when I noticed that the heatsink was really loose. So I had to go out and buy thermal grease and reapply the grease and reattached the heatsink. Now I’m up and running again, both cores at a cool 40 C. Still it was a pain, so monitor your core’s temperature.

Its sometimes a pain to troubleshoot your computer. I’ve had overheating problems in the past with fans going out and once my temp monitor (a thermaltake) started going out causing my temp alarms to go off about every hour. At least it was just the heatsink coming loose and your computer shutting off kept anything from overheating.

Yeah could of been a lot worse, and all it cost me was $10 thermal grease…better then buying a new CPU.
